Kathy McNeal

Okay, so long story short, I think I'm making my animation worse. I had to scrap a lot of what I had and start from scratch to fix the arcs. I've started with the cog, using the tracing sheets to try and get it working correctly, but I haven't gotten a chance to work with the shoulders, hands, torso, and feet.
That being said, I think I'm making it worse. I tried smoothing out graph editor stuff, but I think I only started fixing an arc that will do me no good. Any harsh comments will be taken under advisement.

  1. you definitely have the right story beats, and the action reads well. but the timing is a bit off, and the overlapping is not working, as you realized yourself. the timing could be better specially when she is sliding down - right now it feels a bit even. so, think about it: would she slow down as she slides down or would she speed up?

when she swings side to side, don't think much of a pendulum. the cog shouldn't move too much, the pendulum will happen more on the legs, actually. i think the important thing here is to convey the idea of weight when she falls - but having a change in the bend of he elbows. so that when she starts falling the elbows are a bit bent, then they straighten when she is in the lower position, and bend a tiny bit when she kind of catches herself.

really look at reference for this. reference will be your best friend in this shot.

try to feel the movement and look carefully at reference. it seems to be your are thinking too much when doing the overlap (too much brain) and not FEELING enough... look at reference, try to do the same action (don't hurt yourself though) and don't think too much of turning her into a pendulum. the COG will swing a bit side to side - but a lot slower than what you are doing... you COG is swinging too fast. the legs are the part that will probably swing more.

  2. Okay, that actually helps a lot. Those are the things I will focus on. And I'll see what I can do to go to a playground and swing off some monkey bars. Thanks Raquel!!
